Driving From Vancouver to Whistler in Winter: Road Trip Tips
Everything you need to know about driving the Sea to Sky Highway in winter: tires, timing, parking, and what to pack.
The drive from Vancouver to Whistler is about two hours in good conditions and one of the prettiest in Canada. In winter, it needs a bit more preparation.
Tires and chains
Winter tires (mountain snowflake symbol) are typically required on the Sea to Sky Highway from October 1 to April 30. Always check DriveBC for current requirements and conditions before you leave. Carry chains if you drive a vehicle that needs them.
Timing your trip
Leave early on Friday evenings or Saturday mornings to avoid the heaviest traffic. Coming back on Sunday afternoon is busy, so consider leaving mid-morning or staying for the evening.
Weather and road conditions
Snow, rain and avalanche control can close or slow the highway. Check DriveBC and the weather forecast, carry food and water, and keep your fuel tank at least half full.
Parking in Whistler
Day lots fill early on weekends. Arrive before 8:30 am or park at Creekside and ride the gondola. Overnight parking is often cheaper outside the Village.
Alternatives to driving
Shuttles and buses run from Vancouver and the airport to Whistler. If you do not need a car, they are often cheaper and simpler than driving.
Pack your gear
Do not fly with your skis if you are flying in. Pick up a local rental and keep your travel light.
