How to Beat the Lift Lines in Whistler
Simple strategies for avoiding Whistler lift lines: when to arrive, which lifts to use and how to plan your day on busy weekends.
Whistler is busy on weekends, holidays and powder days. You cannot avoid crowds entirely, but you can plan around them.
Arrive early
Being on the first chair gives you the best snow and no wait. The Village gondolas can see queues by 9:30 am, so leave your lodging early.
Use the right base
- Creekside Gondola often has shorter lines than the Village.
- Blackcomb's Excalibur Gondola gets busy at peak times, so consider the Base II area for a mid-mountain start.
- Olympic and Big Red chairs are great for staying in the lower mountain without heading into the crowds.
Move around the mountain
Crowds follow the sun and the fresh snow. Ski the opposite side of the mountain to everyone else and use less obvious lifts. If one gondola is backed up, try an alternative route to the same terrain.
Timing tricks
- Skip the lunch rush by eating early or late.
- Ski the last hour, lifts empty quickly in the late afternoon.
- On storm days, head for the trees and lower lifts.
Prep off the hill
Buy tickets in advance, have gear fitted the night before and keep your pass and ticket accessible. Pick up a rental the day before so there is nothing to sort out on the morning of your first day.
