Backcountry Skiing Near Whistler: Gear, Safety and Where to Start

The mountains around Whistler offer world-class backcountry skiing and splitboarding, but they demand respect, training and the right equipment.

Start with education

Take an Avalanche Skills Training (AST 1) course before going into the backcountry. Learn to read terrain, check the Avalanche Canada forecast and practise rescue skills with your partners.

Essential gear

• Avalanche transceiver (beacon), probe and shovel, which you must carry and know how to use.
• Touring  skis or splitboard with skins.
• Touring boots or a splitboard-compatible setup.
• Backpack with space for layers and food.
• Helmet and sunglasses or goggles.

Rent before you buy

Backcountry gear is expensive. Renting lets you test different setups before investing. Find touring and splitboard rentals from local owners.

Where to begin

Consider going with a guide or a certified group for your first few trips. Areas accessible from lifts, such as the Spearhead zone, can be convenient but still carry real avalanche risk.

Plan carefully

• Check the forecast and avalanche bulletin.
• Tell someone your route and return time.
•  Ski with partners and keep your group together.
• Turn around if conditions change.

Mindset

Good decisions matter more than fitness or technique. Be willing to change your plan, and remember that the best run is the one you  ski safely.
