Salt Spring Island: The Gulf Islands' Best-Kept Adventure Secret

Most people know Salt Spring Island for its Saturday Market, its artists, and its farm-to-table food scene. What they underestimate is the island's outdoor depth.

Salt Spring is 182 square kilometres of volcanic rock, old-growth Douglas fir, salt marsh, and exposed coastline. It has over 100km of hiking and biking trails, world-class sea kayaking from multiple launch points, and some of the best landscape photography light in BC. And it has a passionate local community of outdoor enthusiasts with gear worth renting.

Getting There

Ferry from Tsawwassen (2.5 hrs), Swartz Bay near Victoria (35 min), or Crofton on Vancouver Island (20 min). Foot passenger + bike is a great option — bring a bike from the mainland or rent one on island.

Note: Vehicle ferries fill up fast in summer. Book early or go foot passenger + rental.

The Adventure Case for Salt Spring

Sea Kayaking

The channels between the Gulf Islands are sheltered, tidal, and teeming with marine wildlife. Harbour seals, orcas (occasional), bald eagles, great blue herons, and in late summer, schools of salmon surfacing in the narrows.

Launch points:

Rent from a Salt Spring local who can advise on tidal timing, current conditions, and the best marine wildlife zones. A sit-on-top kayak is fine for harbour paddling; a touring kayak opens up longer crossings.

Mountain Biking

Mount Maxwell and Ruckle Provincial Park have intermediate trails with incredible viewpoints. The roads are also excellent for loaded cycle touring between ferry terminals.

Rent a hardtail mountain bike for the trails or a gravel bike if you want to ride road and gravel. E-bikes are increasingly popular for the hills.

Photography

Salt Spring's light is exceptional — island light always is, with the reflective quality of surrounding water. Key subjects:

Camping

Ruckle Provincial Park is one of the finest oceanfront camping experiences in BC. 78 walk-in sites perched above the Swanson Channel. Book early — it's beloved and fills up. Bring your own kit or rent locally from an islander.
