Camera Gear Rentals in Squamish, BC: Shoot the Chief, the Peaks & the Sea-to-Sky
Squamish sits at the convergence of three extraordinary photographic environments: the ocean (Howe Sound), the granite (Stawamus Chief), and the sky corridor between them. An hour north of Vancouver on the Sea-to-Sky Highway, Squamish punches far above its size as a photographic destination.
Climbers scaling the Chief. Bald eagles wintering by the thousands along the Squamish River (the world's largest concentration outside Alaska). Kite surfers on the estuary. Mountain bikers on the Crumpit Woods trails. Shannon Falls roaring with snowmelt. The Tantalus Range looming across the valley in almost supernatural clarity.
Like Whistler and Tofino, there is no camera rental house in Squamish. Rented Local connects visiting photographers with local gear owners.
What to Shoot in Squamish
The Stawamus Chief
One of the world's great granite monoliths. Photographed from the highway pullout with a wide angle, or from the summit (2–4 hour hike) with a telephoto compressing the valley below. Dawn light on the Chief face is particularly spectacular.
Bald Eagle Season (November–February)
The Squamish and Cheakamus Rivers host the world's largest concentration of wintering bald eagles outside of Alaska. A telephoto (400mm+) is essential. Eagles in flight, eagles fishing, eagles on snags — it's extraordinary and almost entirely unknown outside the region.
Shannon Falls
BC's third-highest waterfall (335m) is 10 minutes from Squamish town. Long-exposure shots with a 6-stop ND filter turn the falls silky while the surrounding granite stays sharp.
Howe Sound and the Squamish Estuary
Kayakers, kite surfers, seals, great blue herons, and a coastal mountain backdrop. The estuary boardwalk is excellent at golden hour.
Sea-to-Sky Gondola
A short ride gives you elevated access to Coast Mountain terrain that normally requires a full day of hiking. Great for aerial-perspective mountain photography without a drone.
What Camera Gear to Rent in Squamish
Bodies
Sony A7R V or Nikon Z8 — High resolution for landscape work. Strong autofocus for wildlife and action.
Canon R7 (crop sensor) — The 1.6x crop factor effectively multiplies your telephoto reach. A 400mm becomes a 640mm equivalent — excellent for eagle photography.
Lenses
16–35mm f/2.8 — Chief panoramas, Shannon Falls environmental shots, Howe Sound coastlines.
70–200mm f/2.8 — Climbing action on the Chief, mountain bike athletes on trails, wildlife at medium range.
100–400mm or 150–600mm — Eagle photography requires this reach. Non-negotiable for winter wildlife work in Squamish.
Macro (100mm) — Squamish's rainforest floor — mosses, ferns, fungi — rewards macro exploration.
Drone
DJI Mavic 3 Pro — Squamish's airspace is generally more permissive than national parks. The Chief from above, the estuary from aerial perspective, the Sea-to-Sky corridor — drone footage here is world-class. Always verify Transport Canada restrictions before flying.
Accessories
ND Filters (6-stop + 10-stop) — For Shannon Falls long exposures.
Circular Polarizer — For Howe Sound water shots and managing coastal haze.
Rain cover for body and lens — Squamish gets significant rainfall. Coast Mountain weather is variable and fast-moving.
